Raised Downtowns in Central District

The first Friday in June gives us an excuse to unapologetically order a dozen (or two) doughnuts and exercise extra indulgence first thing in the morning. At Seattle Food Scene, we’re about helping one another and Krispy Kreme Doughnuts seeks everyone’s help in giving away 1 million doughnuts.

While savoring your jelly filled or glazed or powdered or cinnamon-sugar dusted or gluten-free vegan doughnut, also remember how National Doughnut Day came about: During World War I, women, dubbed the “doughnut lassies,” prepared doughnuts for the soldiers on the front lines of France. That’s right. You can thank those badass women for National Doughnut Day.

In no particular order, these are our favorite doughnut shops where you can celebrate National Doughnut Day.

General Porpoise Doughnuts and Coffee - Stemming from the talented mind of Renee Erickson, owner of Sea Creatures, General Porpoise’s menu specializes in malasadas, hole-less, coated with granular sugar, and filled with a choice of many flavors. The Chocolate Marshmallow ranks sits at the top in our ranks. Our favorite location can be found in Pioneer Square. From the hexagon tiles to the marble tabletops to the exposed brick walls and pops of bright pink, it aesthetically stole our hearts.

Top Pot Doughnuts - In our book, Top Pot reigns as a reliable fallback for any doughnut craving. With more than forty different offerings, patrons most likely will succeed in finding the flavor they crave. Nowadays, you don’t have to go to a Top Pot storefront to pickup your doughy treat. Grocery stores post up the forging-doughnut-maker on their doughnut displays.

Mighty-O - As we become more intentional about the businesses we support, Mighty O made it to our list with regard to their business practices. For National Doughnut Day, ten percent of the proceeds will go towards LunchDebt to help eliminate Student Lunch Debt. Besides being yummy, Mighty-O uses organic ingredients indicating to us, they’re concerned about the quality and eliminating unpronounceable chemicals in the food we consume.

Daily Dozen Doughnut Company - Oh, Daily Dozen. Wandering around Pike Place Market wouldn’t be the same without a bag of warm mini doughnuts in one hand, popping a doughnut with the other, and politely elbowing the crowds as you peruse. Daily Dozen invokes childhood memories for us, linked to initial visits to the iconic market and coming to the Pacific Northwest.

Duzn Donuts - Launched just over a month ago, Duzn Donuts eliminates the hassle of grabbing breakfast treats. Found on every delivery application under the sun, Duzn Donuts has freshly made mini donuts delivered to you. Launch the application. Submit your order. Wait for your delivery. In under an hour, you could very well be an instant office hero. Find the hero in you.

Donut Factory - Years ago, when cronuts finally made their way to the greater Seattle area, it was rumored that Donut Factory offered a comparable option to the New York creation. Today, they have University Village and Lynnwood to call home. To this day, their Maple Bacon Bar outshines the others with bits of crumbled bacon scattered generously and evenly across the bar, ensuring a bite of salty-sweetness as you devour it.

Raised Doughnuts - We do double-takes when we see Raised Doughnuts. As their name implies, the Raised Doughnut menu items raises the bar on doughnut flavors. In the past, they’ve had Strawberry Balsamic to Burnt Sugar & Orange to Raspberry Ginger, on the menu for June. As one of the few places offering a gluten-free option, Raised Doughnutshas our back for our GF friends. Not only that, they have Pupnuts to treat our four-legged furry friends.
